The Enneagram is a geometric symbol that maps out the unconscious patterns that direct our thoughts, feelings and behaviours.
When we were young, we all learned coping strategies to get our needs met and these gradually became fixed patterns of behaviour – our default mode. These patterns can be hard to see because they are so unconscious and familiar.
Understanding the model of the Enneagram helps us begin to see ourselves more clearly. We begin to identify the habitual traps that keep us from living fully and being our truest self. We also start to understand why others behave the way they do, which can make us more compassionate towards the people around us.
Ones are conscientious, ethical people who are hardworking and self critical. They focus on what is wrong and needs fixing.
Twos are kind, charming and friendly. They are drawn to help others but can be unaware of their own needs. They focus on relationships.
Threes are confident and driven but can be workaholics. They focus their energy on succeeding at the next project or task.
Fours are expressive, emotional and introspective. They focus on being original and authentically themselves.
Fives are curious and alert but can withdraw when they feel overwhelmed. They focus on understanding complex information.
Sixes are loyal and trustworthy but tend to worry about problems and difficulties. They focus on reducing uncertainty in their lives.
Sevens are extroverted, open-minded but hate to be bored. They focus on having fun and making life as stimulating as possible.
Eights are independent, bold, and straight talking. They don't like to be vulnerable and focus on staying in control.
Nines are easy going and accepting but can find it hard to make decisions. They focus on keeping life peaceful and avoiding conflict.
